Rep. Rukavina arrested for drunk driving
DFL Representative Tom Rukavina was recently cited for drunk driving. As a state legislator, he has consistently opposed tightening drunk driving standards, such as lowering the drunk driving threshold to 0.08 from 0.10. While it may be true that drunk driving is more common and more socially acceptable in rural areas, this does not make it right. He has already apologized, and will suffer the legal consequences. There is simply no excuse for drunk driving.

Rep. Rukavina was correct in opposing tighter DUI restrictions because 99 % of arrests are above 0.1 anyway. So it makes very little sense in my opinion to lower it. I don’t think Rukavina however, was thinking this way. He was pandering to the wishes of a few of his constituents who have problems with drinking and driving and he may have been thinking about his own future actions too. Of course, any DUI arrest is inexcusable and any apology should be taken with a grain of salt. Thank you Rep. Rukavina for setting the example as to how government officials should not act.
As a reformed drunk, now 26 years sober, I know I put many miles on my car while drunk. More than likely, it is not the first time Rep. Rukavina has allegedly driven drunk.
