Light rail: looking good
The Hiawatha light rail line has been open for a year, and it's mainly looking good. I'm one of its users, and I have used it for many of the reasons other people use it: for Twins games, to the Mall of America, and to downtown. It's great, and I hope we see an expansion of light rail transit in the area.

The Light Rail Line is doing so well they're upping the pass price by 95% to $78 a month. There's a sure fire way to nip a successful venture in the bud! When it comes to transit in this state, it's always one step forward, two steps back.
I used to live in Minneapolis before relocating to a non-frozen city, and I was back in town for a visit recently. Finding myself in a situation where I needed to get from the Mall to the airport to catch a flight, and no one to drive me, I thought, "Hey! I'll try the light rail."
What a great experience! Luggage in hand, I wandered up to the Mall's information desk and asked where the train station was, and the young worker pointed me to the proper elevator. I grabbed my $2 ticket from an easy-to-use kiosk and hopped on a waiting railcar. After a slow-ish wander through Bloomington, I was speeding underground and arriving at the main terminal in no time.
But... why stop there? My ticket was good for 2 more hours! So I rode on up to 46th street for fun, got out and got on a southbound train back to the terminal. Ridership looked healthy, as both trains were full. The underground accessway from the station to the ticket counter was easy, and I was winging home.
Minnesota has a good thing going there. I hope to see that line connect Minneapolis and St. Paul (maybe through the Midway district), or St. Paul to the airport via 5.
