Randy Kelly says he is remaining a Democrat. I suspect this is much like how the Nazis were technically "National Socialists," or how East Germany was the "Democratic" German Republic.

Ouch.
I know a lot of us have differences with Hizzoner Kelly on some of the political stuff (I do), but to compare him to a politician from Nazi Germany or East Germany is wayyy over the top.
Agree to disagree, but don't stoop to the same level our right-flank Republican friends.
I don't think that's exactly what he was doing, halfback. Still, as Dick Durbin could tell you, just mentioning "Hitler" or "Nazi" anywhere in your comments is enough to get everyone all riled up and completely miss the point you were trying to make.
As for Kelly, his speech basically said to St. Paul voters: "OK, you guys kind of lost control of your senses there and voted against me. That's okay, I forgive you your lapse in judgment. Now let's get on with business."
I can only figure one of two things:
1) He's a very arrogant man who has grown extremely out of touch with his constituents.
2) He knows he doesn't have a chance of winning, so he gives this speech - repeatedly flogging the "angry, irrational Democrats" meme - to make himself into a martyr with the GOP, and secure some sort of appointed office from Bush or Pawlenty.
chris, you are spot on.
I would argue it is a combo platter of the two points you made.
He represented the east side of St. Paul at the state legislature for many, many years and that district has traditionally been a DFL stronghold. Most areas of the City of St. Paul are generally leaning towards the Dems, so it is somewhat interesting to try and analyze why "Republicans" have been able to hold the Mayor's office for as long as they have.
I suspect this is the end of the road for Mr. Kelly in terms of holding an elective office. I would agree that an appointment from Pawlenty would not be out of the question. An appointment from Bush/Norm Coleman is a longer shot.
wow lots of spam posts all of a sudden ... anyway, when kelly loses -- will he rise like a phoenix/norm coleman and become a repub? what then?
what was he thinking by endorsing bush? he's got no options left -- senate, nope. house, nope. maybe a state congressman????
as an aside, the repub pr operation they got behind the scenes makes me dislike him even more ... finally we got someone who at least comes off as un-slimey in coleman
